Production is an important part of logistics

For many, logistics is still pictured as a linear flow: a box comes in, goes onto a shelf, and then goes out again. In practice, it is far more complex. For many customers, the activities that take place between inbound and outbound are just as important - and often absolutely critical - for being able to deliver the products at all.

At Speed, production has long been part of logistics assignments. In recent years, that role has become increasingly clear as more customers request support with activities such as assembly, soldering and testing.

A working day with great variety

At the Borås site, around twenty employees currently work in the production department that has evolved in close collaboration with our industrial customers. The production areas are designed to accommodate the wide range of assignments, and the time required to complete a unit varies significantly.

     - We have products that take 45 minutes to complete, and others that require up to 80 hours, says Maria Blomqvist, Supervisor of the department. That places high demands on planning, but it also creates a working environment with a lot of variation.

The work today includes assembly, wiring, soldering and testing. While the assignments differ, what they all have in common is the need to be performed close to logistics in order to function efficiently.

Competence at the core

For the past two years, one of the production areas has required certification - a development driven by the quality requirements of customer products.

To ensure long-term skills supply, Speed has recently launched a training programme. Seven employees combine theoretical training at soldering school with supervised hands-on work in daily production. The programme runs for four to five months and includes topics such as Lean, ESD and reviews of work processes.

     - Our ambition is for training and production to go hand in hand, says Jonas Good, Production Developer. That’s how we ensure consistent quality over time.

A department in transformation

Since the production operations at the Borås site were consolidated into a dedicated area, the work has gradually evolved. Between autumn 2025 and today, the department has grown from four to seventeen employees. Growing demand means recruitment is still ongoing.

     - It’s a department in motion, says Maria. Needs are changing rapidly, both for us and for our customers.

Part of an integrated logistics flow

Although production and logistics are often discussed as separate disciplines, in practice the boundary between them is far less distinct. For many of Speed’s customers, production activities are an integrated part of their logistics flow. Having everything in the same location reduces transports, shortens lead times and provides better oversight.

Speed’s continued development and consolidation of production activities is therefore not about broadening the business, but about making logistics flows more cohesive.

     - This isn’t new to us, says Jonas. It’s really a deepening of something we’ve been doing for a long time. The difference is that today we have more structure, clearer routines, and an environment purpose-built for the task.
